— International Youth Leaders Energized to Make Change After
Jane Goodall’s Global Youth Summit
Arlington, Virginia, April 25, 2008 – One hundred youth from six continents and 28 countries are heading home today after taking part in Jane Goodall’s Global Youth Summit. This first annual event, which took place April 19-25 at Walt Disney World Resort® in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., mobilized the young leaders to address some of the critical issues facing the planet. The attendees are returning to their communities with a renewed commitment to making positive change happen and armed with the knowledge that – together – they can make the world a better place.

Arlington, Virginia --- The Jane Goodall Institute hailed Wednesday’s signing into law of the Chimp Haven is Home Act, a bill that will ensure chimpanzees living in sanctuary after years of medical research in government-funded facilities will not be returned to the labs.

Washington, DC – With support from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Jane Goodall Institute will begin the first phase of a multi-year effort to protect chimpanzee populations and habitat in an ecologically diverse region of Central Africa that includes one of the most endangered ecosystem types on the continent.

— California Students and World Renowned Primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall
To Be Honored for Efforts to Save Endangered Species
The students, ranging in age from 8 to 13, began a campaign in 2000 to help the recovery effort of the small canine relative of the grey fox when they learned that four of the fox subspecies were threatened with extinction on four of the six Channel Islands on which the fox is found. The group was organized by then 8-year-old Allie Morris, daughter of Channel Islands National Park archaeologist Don Morris and teacher Susan Morris who became the S.O.S. parent leader.

“It’s quite possible that today’s teenagers will raise their children in a world with no wild chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos,” she said while on a lecture tour in Germany. “It’s a tragic prospect, but there is still time to act – though scant little of it. I hope all of us, especially our young people, will do everything they can to save the great apes, who are so like us in so many ways.”

Prince of Asturias Award for Technical & Scientific Achievement
Primatologist and environmentalist Dr. Jane Goodall, has been selected to receive one of Spain’s highest honors—the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Achievement. Since 1981, the Prince of Asturias Foundation has granted the awards which are presented annually by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Asturias and Crown Prince of Spain Felipe de Borbon y Grecia. The presentation of the award will be at a solemn academic ceremony in October in Oviedo, capital of the Principality of Asturias.
