The incumbent will report to the VP of Outreach and International Tour Manager.   The responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Accompanying Dr. Goodall and assistant on her U.S. tour as needed providing general support, overseeing merchandise sales and book signings, supporting membership sales and managing volunteers at events.
  • Coordinating onsite logistics for U.S. tour.
  • Working closely with the International Tour Manager to advance all speaking/other events, coordinating with event sponsors, third parties and other JGI departments as appropriate.
  • Handling tour photos: processing release forms and posting photos on the internet.
  • Compiling “roadie files” for Dr. Goodall’s assistant prior to each domestic and international tour leg.
  • Preparing and processing expense reports for the VP/Founder.
  • Maintaining accurate financial reports from tour sales. Providing feedback on effectiveness of merchandise/signage etc. as necessary.

Program Manager, Roots & Shoots

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is currently seeking a full-time Program Manager to implement and supervise the national Roots & Shoots program. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of Tanzanian students, Roots & Shoots engages young people in service projects that help people, animals and the environment, and connects them with similarly engaged young people worldwide. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT AND EVALUATION

DATABASE AND MEMBERSHIP MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee online and offline membership processes
  • Implement procedures for timely and accurate entry and updating of databases
  • Create systems for regular quantitative reporting on programmatic success
  • Manage customer service policies and procedures
  • Manage acknowledgement and treatment of Roots & Shoots donors

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, master’s degree preferred
  • Strong interest in youth service, leadership and positive development
  • Minimum five years relevant work experience; prior personnel and project management experience required; education or international experience a plus

Program Manager for East and Central Africa

 Position Summary

 The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is recruiting a Program Manager for East and Central Africa.  This position is responsible for providing managerial and technical oversight and support for JGI's operations and its current portfolio of research and community-centered conservation projects and programs.  The geographic focus of this position includes Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda.  This position is located in the Africa Programs Department of the Arlington, Virginia headquarters of JGI, and reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Africa Programs.  This position is one of six (6) on the Africa Programs team responsible to all sub-Saharan Africa JGI funded field offices, and works closely with all JGI Departments in Arlington, VA, particularly the Finance and Development Departments.

 Responsibilities

This position is part of a highly cohesive and dynamic team that is responsible for: a) implementing, monitoring, and evaluating JGI's Africa Programs Strategy, and contributing to the implementation of JGI's broader strategy; b) providing strategic, policy and operational guidance to JGI operations, programs and projects in sub-Saharan Africa, and c) providing managerial oversight, managing essential program and technical support to, and monitoring and evaluating JGI's Africa Programs portfolio in sub-Saharan Africa.

 
Specific Responsibilities

  •  Serves as principal liaison to, and builds, leverages and maintains professional relations with, international and U.S. environmental conservation and development organizations, U.S. and other bilateral government donors, multilateral funding agencies, and sub-Saharan Africa regional intergovernmental organizations.
  • Acts as principal liaison in the conduct of consultations on JGI Africa Programs policy and programs with donors, foundations, the private sector and the non-governmental community.
  • Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with JGI field staff in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Provides technical input to, and manages and coordinates the development and implementation of, JGI country strategies in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Provides policy and technical input for new initiative conceptualization, program and project development, design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Identifies programmatic and funding opportunities to support the achievement of the goal and objectives of the Africa Programs Strategic Plan and the implementation of JGI sub-Saharan project/program activities.
  • Provides advice and guidance in, and coordinates the preparation of, JGI's response to grant solicitations from international donor agencies, foundations, the private sector and other funding entities for the development, design, implementation and evaluation of new program/project initiatives. In collaboration with JGI's Development, Policy and Finance Departments, develop, write, and when required, review concept papers, proposals, Letters-of-Inquiry, etc. in response to Terms-of Reference, Requests-for-Proposals and Requests-for-Applications from USAID, other U.S. Government agencies, other bilateral governments and multilateral agencies, as well as foundations, private companies and corporations and other major donors.
  • Manages the development and approval process for all budget submissions from JGI sub-Saharan Africa field offices in accordance with JGI budget parameters and schedules for all JGI programs/projects in East and Central Africa.
  • Ensures all reporting to donors and to JGI – USA is performed in accordance with reporting instructions and submitted in accordance with reporting schedules. Tracks, and when required, drafts and/or edits JGI sub-Saharan Africa field offices monthly, quarterly, and annual program and financial progress reports for internal and external monitoring and evaluation of program/project performance purposes, and to meet specific donor reporting requirements.
  • Represents JGI-USA at U.S., regional, and international conferences and workshops.
  • Travels to sub-Saharan Africa, as required, to provide program support.
  • Represents JGI Africa Programs in meetings, conferences, and workshops on the topical subjects of Community Development, Socio-economic Development, and Gender Topics and Issues as they relate to Biodiversity Conservation to document best practices and lessons learned.
  • Recruits staff for JGI Africa Programs field operations and programs
  • Responds to information requests from East and Central Africa JGI field offices, update Africa Programs database, as required, and perform other tasks assigned by the Executive Vice President of Africa Programs.
Qualifications

Education:

Undergraduate degree (preferably a graduate degree) in international and/or rural development, conservation, or natural resource management.

 
Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant work experience on sub-Saharan Africa with a private foundation, international conservation organization or international development agency with multi-year development and/or conservation projects/programs in a developing country setting;
  •  A minimum of 2 years relevant work experience in a developing country, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa;
  • Proven cross-functional management experience preferred, with ability to work as a member of a high-performing team;
  • Ability to work under deadline pressures and to manage multitask requirements
  •  Aptitude for program and/or project planning, management, and evaluation.
  • Facility to work collaboratively with local and international organizations, the private sector and with bilateral and multilateral economic development funding agencies.
  • Proficiency in budget and grant formulation, development and management.
  • Adeptness at recognizing and managing politically sensitive matters; and
  • Demonstrated mature judgment and integrity.

Skills:

  •  Highly energetic and disciplined;
  • Strong resource management skills;
  • Sound analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the capacity to influence without formal authority, and the ability to work as a team member in Africa Programs and across organizational boundaries;
  • Strong organizational and communications skills essential in managing a host of relationships including with donors, stakeholders, and partners;
  • Exceptional diplomatic skills and the ability to reach out to many different audiences, including members of the JGI organization, and the management and staff of multilateral and bilateral donor agencies, nongovernmental organizations, private foundations, major donors, the private sector, and most importantly to the JGI field staffs;
  • Fluency in English and fluency in Kiswahili and/or French are essential; and
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs.

JGI works to protect Great Apes and their habitats by combining conservation, research and education with assistance to local communities.  Its youth programs are designed to build a worldwide network of young people who are taking action to care for the environment, animals and human communities. 

The Vice President of Youth Programs will be responsible for the development and growth of the Institute's Roots & Shoots program.  Roots & Shoots engages young people in projects in their local communities that help people, animals and the environment, and connects them with similarly engaged young people worldwide.   The VP Youth Programs will also oversee the implementation of the Jane Goodall Global Youth Summit, an annual gathering of committed young people from many countries.  With a US staff of 20, and a budget of $2.3 million, JGI's youth programs link groups in more than 90 countries, and are poised to continue their rapid expansion.
